Is It a Plantar Wart?

Plantar warts grow on the sole, heel or toes. Your body weight pushes them into the skin, so they're usually flat rather than raised.

Signs to look for:

  • A small, rough spot on the sole, often on the ball of the foot, the heel or the base of the toes
  • Hard, thick skin (callus) over the spot
  • Tiny black dots: small clotted blood vessels, often called "seeds"
  • It breaks up the normal lines of the skin
  • It hurts when you walk or stand
  • Sometimes a cluster of warts close together (mosaic warts)

Signs from Mayo Clinic. Wart basics from healthdirect.

Wart or Corn?

They can look alike, but they're treated very differently.

Plantar wart

  • Tiny black dots
  • Breaks up the skin lines
  • Often hurts more when squeezed from the sides

Corn

  • No black dots
  • Skin lines run through it
  • Often hurts more when pressed straight down

Still not sure? Telling them apart is part of your assessment.

Do Plantar Warts Go Away on Their Own?

Often, yes. Warts are caused by a virus (HPV). In children, about half of all warts disappear within 6 months without treatment, and almost all (9 in 10) go within 2 years. It can take longer in adults.

Left alone, a plantar wart in an adult can last for several years. Some become painful to walk on.

So waiting is a reasonable choice for some people. Part of your assessment is deciding whether treating yours now is worth it.

When to Get a Wart Checked

  • It's painful, or it's bothering you
  • It looks infected: red, swollen and warm
  • It bleeds, or changes shape or colour
  • You have many warts, or they're spreading
  • Your immunity is low
  • You're pregnant or planning a pregnancy
  • You have diabetes or poor feeling in your feet
  • You're not sure it's a wart

healthdirect suggests showing a doctor any wart on your feet. A podiatrist can check foot warts too.

How Falknor's Needling Works

Wart virus lives in the top layer of skin, where your immune system often doesn't notice it. Needling aims to change that.

1 2 3 4 5 6
  1. Hard skin (callus)
  2. Top layer of skin
  3. Deeper layer, with a blood supply
  4. The wart, with tiny black dots
  5. A fine, sterile needle
  6. Wart material pushed into the deeper layer

Numbing First

A local anaesthetic injection numbs the area before anything else happens. You stay awake throughout.

A Fine, Sterile Needle

The needle is passed through the wart many times, carrying wart material down into the deeper layer of skin.

The Aim: An Immune Response

The deeper layer has a blood supply. The aim is that your immune system notices the virus there and responds to it.

About an Hour

One appointment, including the anaesthetic and the dressing.

What Happens at Your Appointments

There are two appointments: an assessment first, then the procedure if it suits you.

Your Assessment

$85 new patients · normally $110

We check it's a wart, how many there are and how deep, what you've already tried, and your general health. Then we talk through your options, including leaving it alone. There's no obligation to book anything.

The Needling Procedure

$330 · about an hour

Booked as a separate, longer appointment if needling suits you and you want to go ahead. Sometimes that can be the same day; otherwise it's the next available time. The price covers the local anaesthetic, dressings and every wart treated in that session.

Aftercare and Review

Review visit included

You'll go home with a dressing and written aftercare instructions. Your review visit, to check how the wart is responding, is included in the $330.

After the Procedure

The foot can be tender for a few days. Amanda will tell you how to look after the dressing, which pain relief to use, and what to avoid and for how long.

Possible Side Effects

Soreness for a few days, bleeding or bruising, infection, and a reaction to the local anaesthetic. The wart may not clear.

What to Bring to Your Assessment

  • A list of your medicines
  • The shoes you wear most
  • Your GP's details
  • Any questions you'd like to ask

When Needling Isn't the Right Choice

Needling isn't suitable for everyone. Some people's circulation, medical history or medicines make it a poor choice. Sometimes the spot turns out not to be a wart. And sometimes the sensible course is to leave it alone and keep an eye on it.

If it's not right for you, we'll say so and explain what we suggest instead.

Other Options

  • Waiting: many warts go away on their own in time.
  • Chemist treatments: gels or liquids containing salicylic acid, or covering the wart with strong waterproof tape.
  • Freezing (cryotherapy): done by a doctor or other health professional. We don't offer freezing, laser or microwave treatment.

Stop Warts Spreading

Plantar warts spread through skin contact, and from surfaces such as pool areas and gym floors.

  • Wear thongs or sandals around pools, change rooms and gym showers
  • Don't share towels
  • Wash your hands after touching a wart
  • Don't pick or scratch it
  • Don't share wart treatments, or the file or pumice stone you use on it
  • Keep your feet clean and dry

Common Questions

Does Needling Hurt?

The anaesthetic injection stings for a short time, then the area goes numb. Afterwards the foot can be sore for a few days. Amanda will tell you which pain relief to use.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Needling is done in one appointment. At your review we check how the wart is responding. Not every wart responds. If a second session is worth considering, we'll talk it through with you, including the cost.

Can a Wart Come Back?

Yes. No treatment can promise a wart won't come back, and new warts can appear. The tips above on stopping the spread can help.

Do I Need a Referral?

No. You can book online or call us. You only need a referral from your GP if you're claiming Medicare under a GP chronic condition management plan.
